Tentspiration: Charly Schwarz
For our latest ‘Tentspiration’ feature we are stoked to highlight the work of Charly Schwarz. Hailing from Luxembourg, Charly’s work is the definition of tentspiration. And believe us, we know. We literally spend all day looking at photos of tents, so we know what we’re talking about. Read on to find out what’s in Charly’s camera kit, and why the unique Heimplanet inflatable tent is his weapon of choice. And of course your daily dose of #tentporn.
Tell us a little about yourself. Where you are from, where you currently reside, what you do for a living, and what you do for fun?
My name is Charly and I come from Luxembourg, but I currently live in the heart of the Austrian Alps. I am a freelance photographer and I am into several different sports, hiking and camping in the mountains, and traveling the world with my camera. I also love design in every way, especially interior design and furniture.
What is in your camera bag?
My gear consists of a Canon 5d mk III camera, and Sigma 35mm f1.4 Art, Sigma 85mm f1.4 Art, Canon 16-35mm f4 L IS USM, and Canon 70-200 f4 L Lenses. I also carry a tripod, Kindle, headlamp and a pair of headphones.
What is it that you love about outdoor photography?
I love the fact, that I can experience all these crazy beautiful places. And I don’t think that I would enjoy hiking and camping etc. that much, if there wasn’t photography which forced me to climb up mountains in the first place. So I’m really glad, that I found my way into outdoor photography.
We noticed you camp with the Heimplanet tent quite a bit. How do you like that compared to a traditional tent with metal or fiberglass poles?
That’s right! Apart from the design, (let’s be honest … Heimplanet makes the best looking tents out there), I really love the system with the poles filled with air. It fits better in my backpack and I can shape the pouch to my needs without worrying about stiff poles. When you’re done with camping and you want to pack your tent, just open the valves, fold a bit and you’re ready to go.
What camping gear are you currently using?
- Tent : Heimplanet Fistral / Heimplanet Nias – Hopefully soon I’ll be using the Heimplanet ‘The Cave’
- Sleeping pad : Thermarest Neo Air Xlite and Thermarest Z-Lite SOL – I love that the Z-Lite is foam! There’s no way a hole can destroy your trip
- Chair : Thermarest chair kit – It allows you to make a chair out of your Thermarest Neo Air
- Sleeping bag : The North Face – Cats Meow
- Pillow : Sea to Summit – Aeros Ultralight – Worth every penny
- Headlamp : Petzl Reactik +
- Stove : MSR Windburner 1.8l – I highly recommend this
- Food : Trek’n Eat
- Cookware : Primus campfire
Do you have any favorite camping or backpacking spots?
I live in the Alps! We have awesome spots around here. But when I have a car, I love to explore South Tyrol, Italy.
It has so much to offer!
What is your favorite photo you’ve ever taken and why?
I don’t really have an all time favorite photo, but this is one of my favorites that I took this summer. In the background you can see the stunning mountain chain of Tre Cime in South Tyrol. In front you see a friend and I enjoying our breakfast. I love the composition, the depth of field, the delicious morning light and the fact that I made it into one of my photos myself, haha. I used my tripod and just snapped this photo without really worrying about the shot.
What projects are you currently working on?
I am currently working on my photography career. Apart from that, I just want to travel more and be outdoors more.
And I have a few plans for 2019, and they involve hiking, mountains, camping and photography for sure! And I would like to work more with brands in the future.
